Back to Basics: 3 Easy Steps to Succeed in Online.

In popular practice, “marketing” is the promotion of products, and when people think promotion they think advertising and branding. However, in professional convention the term has a wider connotation of the exercise and science of trading. The American Marketing Association (AMA) states, “Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders.”

Ok. Caught your breath back? Don’t worry, let us put it in a very simple words for you:

Marketing is Strategy.

Marketing is Action.

Marketing is Passion.

And precisely: strategy, action and passion will help you succeed in your online affiliate business. Now let us tell you why, and how. Let’s talk about step number 1: Strategy.

0.1 Strategy

Have you ever tried to fix an argument without knowing the facts? And to make it even more difficult: without knowing the personalities of the people involved in the argument? Or their concern? Or why the issue is an issue for them? It’s quite an adventure, isn’t it?

Sure, you feel pretty good when you are able to solve the situation, but most  probably more than a few valuable minutes went by while you got the basics covered and solutions lined out. Now, if you go into solving an argument knowing in advance the reason for it, as well as the personalities and worries of both parties, most probably you will be able to present solutions of benefit for both parties and, and react better to the situation. That is strategy.

Knowing what to do and how to do it. Knowing your adversaries and partners. Knowing how and how much to react to a situation, and what might happen and can be done. Is key to solving situations. A “principle of life” you might think.

Correct, it is; and also it is a principle in business.

Now, you might be wondering: how to I get to know all that? There are many ways to do so. But since we are talking basics in this series of articles, let us share a secret with you: SWOT. When you perform a SWOT analysis you get to list your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. You can apply a SWOT analysis to your own business, to your affiliate merchant’s business and your competition business… and why not: your clients themselves! The great thing is that this exercise lets you see and list what you are good at, how you are good at, why you are good at it and how you can get better at it.

And if you know what you are good at, how and why, as well as the other’s party, then you know what to do, how and why (or why not).

Now, what you are going to do to attack a problem or an opportunity, or change an adverse situation is in part strategy but also action. And “action” is the topic for the next Back to Basics article.
